Substance Use Disorder

Yellow curved line vector

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a treatable, chronic brain disease characterized by the compulsive use of substances (alcohol, nicotine, prescription, or illicit drugs) despite harmful physical, social, or legal consequences. It alters brain circuits involved in reward and self-control, leading to impaired functioning, inability to stop, and intense cravings.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications, in combination with behavioral health supports such as counseling, to provide a whole-person approach to treat substance use disorders.

The prescribed medications normalize brain chemistry, block the euphoric effects of drugs and alcohol, relieve cravings, and help stabilize mood. By easing physical discomfort and emotional strain, MAT can allow individuals to focus more on therapeutic work, skill development, and personal growth.

At ARC, care plans are tailored to meet each person’s individual needs. We do not have a one-size-fits-all program of care.
